Sustainability is at the heart of Italyabroad.com

May 03, 2025 Tags: 0 comments
At Italyabroad.com, sustainability isn't just a trend or marketing buzzword, it’s a founding principle, a deep-rooted value that has guided our every decision since 2003. Long before climate change became a global emergency, we recognized the importance of protecting our planet, supporting responsible agriculture, and valuing quality over quantity. From the very beginning, our mission has been clear: to bring authentic Italian food and wine to the UK while working exclusively with small, independent producers who share our commitment to sustainability.

Climate change is no longer a future threat, it’s a present reality. We see its effects in unpredictable weather patterns, shrinking harvests, rising temperatures, and disrupted ecosystems. For the food and wine industry, this isn’t just a global issue; it’s a personal one.

I come from a wine-making and olive-growing family and that personal background gave me a unique understanding of what truly makes great food and wine and it is not only the techniques and technology, outstanding products start in the soil, in the vineyard, in the olive grove.

The love, respect, and care for the land are what create outstanding products. Nature cannot be rushed and small farmer’s patience and passion result in healthier, tastier, and more genuine products. Without a sustainable approach to agriculture, many of the world’s most cherished ingredients and traditions are at risk of disappearing for good.

We chose to work with small, independent producers for one very important reason: they care. They care about the environment because it’s their livelihood. Their vineyards, olive groves, and farms or shops have often been in the family for generations, sometimes centuries. These producers don't just own the land; they live and breathe it. It is part of their identity, heritage, and future. Unlike large scale industrial operations, small producers understand that sustainable farming is not optional. It’s essential. They rely on healthy soils and high quality ingredients to produce outstanding products.

In recent years, food has become a commodity, a race to the bottom where price often trumps quality. Supermarkets advertise who is cheapest, encouraging mass consumption without considering the consequences. Yet, we’re also seeing a growing obesity crisis, mental health issues linked to poor nutrition, and rising food intolerances and allergies. The true cost of cheap, unsustainable food is being paid in our health and our communities, not only in the environment.

Food is our fuel. It influences our mood, our energy levels, our wellbeing. Sustainable, high-quality food not only tastes better, it nourishes our body in a way mass-produced alternatives simply can’t. Choosing sustainable food is also choosing a better and healthier life, and a better future.

We know our producers personally. We visit their farms, their vineyards, their kitchens. That direct relationship ensures traceability and builds trust. When you buy a bottle of wine or a jar of sauce from us, you can be confident you are buying the best.

For small producers, sustainability doesn’t come at a premium, unlike industrial food production. Take pesto, for example: industrially produced versions not only contains gluten derivatives, an allergens that it is not in the recipe, but cost more for the gluten-free version. This approach not only compromises nutrition, but also contributes to the rise in food related intolerances. When you choose real, properly made food, you're fuelling your body not just filling your stomach.

Sustainability is a collective effort. It’s not just about what we do at Italyabroad.com, it’s about the choices we all make every day. When you choose to buy from us, you’re supporting ethical producers, protecting biodiversity, and helping combat climate change. You’re saying “yes” to real food, to responsible farming, and to a future where taste and sustainability go hand in hand. At Italyabroad.com, sustainability isn’t just our mission, it is part of who we are.

It’s time to move beyond price and start choosing foods that nourish our bodies and support sustainability. Prioritize what matters: your health and the planet's future.
