Another red wine from the Valtellina region, the single vineyard DOCG Valtellina Superiore Inferno (hell in Italian), where "Inferno" is the name of the vineyeard and 117 is the land register number. The vineyard is not called Inferno as a joke, but because of the extreme difficulty of working it; despite this, it produces outstanding grapes.
Made with Nebbiolo grapes manually harvested and with a very low yield, this red wine is aged in new French barriques and bigger barrels, tonneaux and aged in the bottle for an additional 24 months.
Even though the wine making process for this wine is very similar to the
Valtellina Superiore Sassella, still, the result could not be more different. We often hear or read of the wine “terroir” and by tasting these two wines, we can clearly appreciate how terroir—through variations in soil and microclimate—shapes the expression of the same grape and defines the character of the final wine.
This is a great Valtellina red wine, a wine with a complex nose, with black cherry and vanilla notes. The palate is full, smooth, velvety and with a great ageing potential.
Rivetti & Lauro is a dream come true. The Valtellina is a mountainous area with vineyards planted on terraces where everything is done manually, including harvesting, and in these mountains Rivetti & Lauro, two friends, decided to follow their dream and passion and making wine. The Nebbiolo is their main grape, Nebbiolo is a great grape that gives it best on these extreme climates, vinified in red and white, but are slowly introducing new grapes to be blended with the Nebbiolo to produce even more outstanding wines.
