Why we love it

Cratis is a remarkable Italian dessert wine made from Verduzzo Friulano, a native white grape variety traditionally cultivated in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The grapes used to produce Cratis are carefully dried on trellises and exposed to the cool, drying Bora winds of Trieste, a natural phenomenon that helps to concentrate the sugars and flavours in the fruit. After the drying process, the grapes are gently fermented in new French oak barriques, where the wine develops its unique complexity and richness.

Cratis is a multi-award-winning Italian dessert wine that has secured its place among the finest sweet wines in Italy. Produced with meticulous care and an unwavering commitment to quality, it is celebrated for its exceptional balance, complexity, and elegance. While we don’t usually boast about accolades, all our wines have received numerous awards over the years - yet Cratis stands out as one of the most consistently celebrated Italian dessert wines of the past three decades. Year after year, it has been honoured with some of the most prestigious awards in the wine industry, including the highly coveted Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) from Gambero Rosso, a recognition reserved only for Italy’s absolute best. This dedication to excellence and consistency has made Cratis a true icon in the world of fine Italian wines, sought after by collectors, sommeliers, and wine lovers alike.

On the nose, Cratis is aromatic and layered, with an enticing bouquet of acacia honey, dried fruit, toasted nuts, and delicate vanilla notes, all brought together with elegance and restraint. On the palate, the wine is lusciously sweet yet perfectly balanced, with a concentrated, velvety texture that is rich but never cloying. What sets Cratis apart from many other sweet wines is the gentle tannic backbone, a distinctive feature of the Verduzzo grape, which gives the wine structure and remarkable ageing potential.

Cratis pairs beautifully with medium-aged cheeses, foie gras, or dry pastries, but it can also be enjoyed on its own as a wine to reflect and linger over. It’s a wine of craftsmanship, authenticity, and patience, the perfect way to end a fine meal or to celebrate a special moment.
