Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Vernaccia di San Gimignano

The Vernaccia di San Gimignano grape is one of Tuscany’s most historic white varieties, cultivated for centuries around the medieval town of San Gimignano. Its name comes from vernaculus (“native”), reflecting its deep roots in the area. Unlike many Italian grapes, Vernaccia has remained tied almost exclusively to this terroir, making it rare and unique.

Vernaccia produces medium, golden-green berries with thick skins, grown in medium to large clusters. It ripens mid to late season and thrives on the hilly vineyards of San Gimignano (200–400 m above sea level). The soils here - rich in limestone, sandstone, and clay - give the grape its signature freshness, minerality, and subtle almond-like bitterness. The climate - warm, sunny days tempered by cool nights - ensures balanced ripening, enhancing both the aromatic profile and natural acidity of the grape. This harmony between soil and climate is crucial, as Vernaccia grown outside its native terroir rarely achieves the same level of complexity or quality.

Moderately vigorous and well adapted to Tuscan hillsides, Vernaccia requires careful yield control to achieve concentration. Its natural acidity and resilience allow different vinification styles, from crisp stainless-steel to richer oak-aged expressions. When fresh, the grape shows aromas of apple, citrus, and white flowers. Its flavors are crisp and mineral with a slight bitter note, a hallmark that carries into the wines.

The Vernaccia di San Gimignano, unlike Trebbiano or Malvasia, which are widely spread across Italy, has remained closely tied to a single territory, contributing to its rarity and prestige. As the only white grape in Tuscany with a DOCG linked to it, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano grape is a true symbol of identity and tradition, valued for both its history and distinctive character.
