Primitivo is one of Italy’s most iconic red grape varieties, deeply rooted in the sun-soaked vineyards of Southern Italy. While it is cultivated in regions such as Abruzzo, Basilicata and Campania, its true home is Puglia (Apulia) - most famously in Manduria, where Primitivo di Manduria DOC wines rank among Italy’s most powerful and expressive reds.
With origins dating back over 2,000 years, Primitivo is believed to have arrived from Dalmatia, introduced by ancient Illyrian settlers who first planted it in Gioia del Colle. The name “Primitivo,” derived from primo (meaning “first”), reflects its early ripening character. In the 1800s, the grape made its way to the United States, where it became known as Zinfandel. Modern DNA analysis has since confirmed that Primitivo and Zinfandel are genetically identical, linking Italian winemaking tradition with an American classic.
Historically used in blends for its rich tannins, deep color, and high alcohol, Primitivo has undergone a renaissance in recent decades, emerging as the flagship red wine of Apulia. Wines such as Primitivo di Manduria DOC showcase its full potential, often with high ABV while delivering balance, elegance, and remarkable aging capacity.
Primitivo produces deep ruby red wines with aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries, and warm spices. On the palate, it is bold, full-bodied, and smooth, with firm tannins, velvety texture, and a long, persistent finish. Its naturally high sugar content contributes to both elevated alcohol and a rich, concentrated style, making it one of the most distinctive and celebrated Italian red wines.
