Why we love it
The Bella di Cerignola olive variety is rarely associated with extra virgin olive oil. Known primarily as a table olive, it has a naturally low oil yield, making it difficult and expensive to produce oil from it. The olive itself is famously large, with an even larger stone, which makes extraction a real challenge.
Yet the Suberito family has succeeded in turning this challenge into something truly special. The result is a remarkable organic extra virgin olive oil that surprises with its elegance and balance.
Cold pressed from a top of the range olive mill, this medium-fruity EVOO reveals delicate aromas of almond and fresh tomato, offering a refined and complex profile. On the palate, the oil shows a harmonious balance where gentle bitterness and light peppery spice complement each other, creating a smooth and well-rounded finish.
Produced in very limited quantities and with great care, this Bella di Cerignola extra virgin olive oil is a unique expression of a rare olive variety and a testament to the expertise of the Suberito family.
Perfect for finishing dishes, drizzling over salads, vegetables, grilled fish, or simply enjoyed with fresh bread.
The artisan who made it
Nestled in the historic heart of Sovereto, an ancient village within the town of Terlizzi in Puglia, southern Italy, Suberito is a family-run olive oil producer rooted in more than a century of agricultural tradition and deep respect for the land. For over 100 years, the Volpe family has devoted itself to tending the fertile fields of Puglia, cultivating not only fruit trees and vines but above all olive groves that define the soulful character of this storied landscape.
The olive trees of Suberito flourish under the warm Mediterranean sun and salty breezes typical of the Apulian countryside, where the generous climate and rich soil create ideal conditions for robust, healthy groves. Spanning over 20 hectares, these trees - native varieties including Ogliarola Garganica, Coratina, and Bella di Cerignola - are meticulously cared for by Sabino and his son Alessandro, who represent the latest generation of growers carrying forward a legacy of sustainable, organic agriculture.
The landscape itself plays a fundamental role in Suberito’s identity: gently rolling fields near the Adriatic coast, punctuated by olive trees whose roots reach deep into Puglia’s calcareous earth, produce fruit that reflects the robust terroir and centuries-old farming wisdom, all nurtured with the family’s commitment to organic cultivation.
