Prosecco

The Prosecco is a sparkling white wine produced from Glera grapes (previously known as Prosecco) and its name comes from Prosecco, an Italian village where the grape is thought to have its origins. The change of name for the grape, from Prosecco to Glera, comes from Prosecco’s promotion from DOC to DOCG status and the name Prosecco is now protected under European law, making it essentially illegal for wines produced outside north-eastern Italy to be labelled as Prosecco. With the promotion of Prosecco to DOCG status, only the Valdobbiadene and Cartizze, a new DOC status was granted to the Prosecco produced outside the historical area but still within the border of the denomination. Any other spakling wine made with different grapes or same grapes grown outside the area, cannot be called prosecco but must be called spumante
