Why we love it
A very elegant, aged Nero d'Avola - in a blind tasting you will struggle to get the grape right, the fruit is there, but there is much more to it - with a complex nose, plenty of black fruit, blueberries above all, but after the first swirl, the fruity aromas give way to spices, cloves, white pepper. On the palate this Nero d’Avola is smooth, soft, velvety, perfectly balanced with a never ending, slightly mineral finish, reminding of the Mediterranean Sea. Outstanding.
Nero d’Avola wines are often associated to one dimensional, fruity, big Sicilian red wines, however, if properly trained, the grape can produce amazing wines suited to ageing and this one comes from the beautiful island of Pantelleria. This is an outstanding red wine to sip or enjoy with mature cheeses and good company or some dark chocolate.
The artisan who made it
Located right in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, on the beautiful island of Pantelleria, there is the Abraxas winery. This is a wondrous paradise, surrounded by crystal clear water and green mountains with truly fantastic weather all year round. Pantelleria is best known for its Moscato di Pantelleria, the most famous Italian dessert wine, produced with Zibibbo grapes left drying outside under the Mediterranean sun. This winery was founded in 1999 when Calogero Mannino, a former Minister of Agriculture, fell in love with the island and made the decision to begin his winemaking adventure with the intention of making wines capable of transmitting the magic of Pantelleria.
