Why we love it

The Ancilla Cococciola IGT is produced with grapes born of cultivation with traditional pergola system, which are harvested in September to be then fermented in stainless steel drums. The result is a wine with a straw yellow color with green highlights. It has an intense and long-lasting taste with hints of citrus. In the mouth it is a captivating and persistent, medium-bodied wine. Serving temperature: 12 to 14°C Serving suggestions: This wine is perfect as an aperitif or for fish or cheese based dishes.

The artisan who made it

Nestled in the Abruzzo hills, facing the Adriatic sea, is the small town of Miglianico, is located the Ciavolich winery. Founded in the late 1950's, the Ciavolich winery is now jointly run by wife and husband Chiara and Gianluca. Abruzzo is largely known for the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, but they also grow native grapes such as Cococciola and Passerina, only found in the oldest wineries and in very small quantity.

I was attracted to the Italyabroad site by the unusual wines on offer. Having never heard of the grape variety Cococciola I had no high expectations so what a surprise when tasting it that I found a stunning wine worthy of a wider audience. A yellowish white colour with a soft straw nose and melon flavours with a light spicy acidity that was balanced and rounded on the palate. The acidity cutting through the creamy sauce that we had with fish but also lovely to drink on its own.
