Andrea’s post on appassimento
wines says that we would only have imported one when and if we had found a great one, a well balanced wine, a wine pleasant to drink, not a liquid marmalate so we were really happy to hear that Roberto decided to make one and even happier after tasting it. Finally we have an appassimento wine for all lovers of the style.
This red wine, made with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso, is aged in small French barriques and bigger barrels for about 10 months before being left to age in tanks for another year.
This is full bodied red wine, with a complex nose with wild berries, roses and tobacco, beautifully balanced, with a pleasant acidity and aromatic, with tons of black cherry on the palate. Soft, smooth, a great appassimento wine. Ideal accompaniment for stews, fried food and semi-aged cheeses or try it with dark chocolate
Roberto Scubla is an amazing person who is very passionate about his wines. He took a big risk and left a safe job in the bank for an uncertain future amongst the vines and he has truly succeeded in what he was trying to achieve. His winery and vineyards are located in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli, north east of Italy, near the Slovenian border, where he grows native grapes like the Friulano and Verduzzo but also grapes that have found an ideal environment in Friuli such as the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon or the Sauvignon and all his wines have plenty of character and elegance.
