Description
This Italyabroad.com autentic Italian restaurant was established 39 years ago, back in 1965. It was the first Italian
restaurant in Newcastle and it has brought Italian cuisine to many generations
on Tyneside. Thus it is has become a well-established point of reference for
Italian food in Newcastle. The majority of Italian restaurants are usually
stereotyped as busy and chaotic places, where you are greeted by singing
waiters. Roma on the other hand, serves authentic Italian food, in a different
way: no gimmicks, just excellent quality food and service. Unfortunately, this restaurant does not make pizzas because according to
Pasquale the owner you need the proper ingredients and the special wood-burning
oven to make good pizza.
His motto is that if you have to make something you
have to make it properly otherwise don't bother at all.
Pasquale attended the renowned school of hoteliers at Villa Santa Maria. This
institution has produced some of the best chefs in Italy. Every dish that he
prepares follows authentic Italian recipes using only traditional techniques and
ingredients of the highest quality.
The restaurant itself is not very large but even when it is full it seems light,
spacious and airy. There is also a cocktail bar with dancefloor facility, for those wishing to book
for parties.
It is easy to associate this restaurant with ancient Rome. On the walls are
paintings of famous monuments and at the end of the dining room there are three
statutes of old roman emperors keeping a watchful eye over the diners. It
is Pasquale that makes sure everything is perfect from the food to the service,
to ensure that the customers enjoy a true Italian eating experience. On a
slightly raised platform lies the most dominating feature of the restaurant, a
tent that resembles part of the residence of a Roman Emperor.
Roma is an intimate restaurant, where your every need, is taken care of by the
attentive waiters, who make the customer their number one priority. The menu is
full of authentic Italian dishes and it also contains a selection of some very
typical roman dishes. "Gamberoni allo spiedo" (King Prawns) and the
"Costoletta di vitello all'aglio" (Veal chop with garlic and rosemary in wine sauce) are the speciality of the house and
these dishes are a must for anyone with a discerning plate.
The prices are slightly higher than the average and there is also a minimum
charge, but if you want to taste special food prepared the Italian way then this
place that must be visited. Most or Roma's regular clientele have been eating at
the restaurant from when they were children. In 39 years Newcastle has changed a great deal
with new restaurants opening and the majority of them closing but Roma has
always remained where it is. You have to ask the question why? Quite simply the
answer is good food and excellent customer service.
