Sardinia
This Italian region is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, the fertile soil and fine climate aids in the growing of grapes with high sugar content. This enables fantastic production of fine sweet wines as well as sparkling varieties.
It has been said that Sardinia can be easily overlooked or grouped with the wines of Sicily and southern Italy, instead of being considered as a separate wine region, however this should not be the case. The most important grape varieties in the region are the Cannonau, red grape, and Vermentino, white wines.
Many of the grapes in Sardinia are of Spanish origin, and other native varieties include the Nuragus and the Sardinian version of Vernaccia.
